Despite how complicated the border looks, it is really quite simple. Just one block! Okay… One block and some Half Square Triangles in the corners. Your quilt top should be 40 1/2″ after adding the Appliqué Border. So this border will need 10 of these little (4″) blocks on each side.

An inner border, an outer border, and in the middle a twisted ribbon border. The pieces for the twisted ribbon border had already been cut 5 years ago when I took part in the class for this. However it was then packed away and forgotten about! Having the pieces already cut out has certainly made life a lot easier.

Assembly: 1. Stitch together one Background A and one Light A as shown at right. Be Step 1. Make 40 sure to match the orientation. Press to Light. Make 40. 2. Add a Dark B as shown to complete the block. Make 40 ea. 4 1/2" Twisted Border Blocks. 3. Stitch together two Step 2 Blocks into a pair, watching orientation as at Step 2. right.

Assembling the Blocks. Layout your blocks in the following pattern with three columns, creating the ribbon effect. Try to nest the seams when sewing. You might want to add a coping strip on either side to separate the ribbon itself from the adjoining piece and binding. Using these instructions my finished border is about 8 inches wide and 44.
